About Marathi

Marathi is the official language of the Indian state Maharashtra and is spoken in the western and central states of Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. It is the 3rd largest language of India in terms of native speakers. Its closest relative is Hindi, with which it shares a writing system, the Devanagari script. A large proportion of Marathi vocabulary comes from Sanskrit, although there are also some influences from Persian, English and Portuguese.
