New name, new horizons for the language challenge

Organisers of the competition – now called The uTalk Challenge – want to spread the word about languages to even more children.

Language learning company uTalk is looking to stage the competition in other countries including India, where it’s already being trialled, as well as Greece and Nigeria. And it wants to make the competition better for UK children and is currently consulting parents and teachers on how best to tweak its format.

“Children have a natural talent for learning languages but sometimes never unlock it,” says competition founder Richard Howeson.

“That’s what this competition is all about, showing them how easy languages can be and how, wherever they go in the world, they can raise a smile and start a friendship just by saying a few words in someone’s else’s language.”

The competition, which is now in its 15th year, is currently open to primary school aged children in the UK and all money raised goes to charity.

Entrants are also given access to language learning software in up to three languages and are given the chance to win a top prize, worth up to £5,000.

The on-going survey only takes 2 minutes to complete and is exploring key aspects of the Challenge, including sharing prize money, timings of the competition, amount of language content made available to participants and entry fee.
