Chichewa is one of many Bantu languages that cover a huge geographical area of sub Saharan Africa. They come from an oral tradition and uTalk has the widest range of them to learn in the market. Nouns are classified differently, for example according to whether they're an animal, plant, or human and this can change the way a sentence works. But don't worry you’ll soon get the hang of it.

Like all Bantu languages, nouns are divided into various classes recognisable by the prefix at the beginning of words. Languages belong to the 'chi-' class. This is related to the 'ki-' in Kiswahili and the 'isi-' in IsiXhosa and IsiZulu.
Known in Malawi as 'the language of the Chewa people' (chi= language), in Zambia it is known as Chinyanja, language of the lake.
The Chichewa word for shoe polish means 'medicine of shoes'.
