About Swiss German (Bernese)

Swiss German refers to the many various German dialects spoken in Switzerland. uTalk teaches the Bernese dialect, which is fairly well understood across the Swiss German part of Switzerland, but other Swiss German dialects can vary hugely between regions and even villages. Swiss German is spoken by around 5 million Swiss - nearly two thirds of the population - and is the language used in everyday life, in all types of social situation. At school, children are also taught Standard Swiss German, which is more commonly written than Swiss German. The two languages are not mutually understandable.

  • There are many borrowings from French, including 'merci' for 'thank you'.
  • One of the most notoriously difficult words for foreigners is Chuchichäschtli - 'kitchen cupboard' - which has three of the hard 'ch' sounds.
  • If you hear Swiss Germans refer to a place called 'Ausland', it means anywhere that isn't Switzerland.
